A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fcell.2021.747870\/full\">study<\/a> published in November 2021 uncovered that exposure to loud noises causes fluid buildup in the inner ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Study<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hearingcarebyhough.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-1280x818.jpg\" alt=\"Woman gets a hearing test at an audiologist's office.\" class=\"wp-image-1116\" width=\"274\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearingcarebyhough.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-1280x818.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/hearingcarebyhough.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hearingcarebyhough.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-1536x982.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/hearingcarebyhough.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/hearing-loss-hearing-test-01-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The study, entitled \u201cEndolymphatic Hydrops Is a Marker of Synaptopathy Following Traumatic Noise Exposure\u201d appears in the journal <em>Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology.<\/em> The research team includes students and faculty from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team confirmed three facts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Loud sounds are associated with a loss of auditory cells in the inner ear.<\/li><li>Exposure causes a condition known as endolymphatic hydrops, or fluid buildup in the inner ear.<\/li><li>Treating fluid buildup with saline solution lessens nerve damage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of hearing loss is sometimes known as \u201chidden hearing loss\u201d because it can\u2019t always be detected by conventional hearing tests. However, scanning for fluid buildup can help experts diagnose and prevent impending nerve damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to lead study author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/11\/211111080420.htm\">John Oghalai, M.D.<\/a>, \u201cFirst, if human ears exposed to loud noise, such as a siren or airbag deployment, can be scanned for a level of fluid buildup \u2013 and this technology is already being tested out \u2013 medical professionals may have a way of diagnosing impending nerve damage. Secondly, if the scan discovered fluid buildup, people could be treated with hypertonic saline and possibly save their hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, this study has important implications for the diagnosis and treatment of Meniere\u2019s disease, a condition thought to be caused by fluid buildup in the ear that triggers episodes of hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and vertigo (spinning sensation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, noise-induced hearing loss is the most preventable type.
